A Superior Court Judge officially called off the liquidation of the Central Coventry Fire District scheduled for next week.

Judge Brian Stern ordered the district instead be turned over to state-appointed receiver Steven Hartford, who has been working with the district for the past 3 months and is in charge of reorganizing the department’s finances.

Termination notices sent out to fire district employees last month will be rescinded effective immediately, meaning that firefighters and administration within the department will be keeping their jobs.

The district has been in bankruptcy receivership since October of 2012, ordered by a judge to liquidate its assets by May 16, until Governor Chafee signed a bill last week that allowed the state to take over.
