Rhode Island has another chance to take home the crown in this year's Miss USA Pageant. Cranston's Olivia Culpo won the title two years ago and next month Providence native Christina Palavra is taking center stage.

When you meet 19–year old Christina Palavra, it's not hard to see why she's Miss Rhode Island. Other than her beautiful black curls and long legs, she has a huge personality. Before taking home the crown at last year's Miss Rhode Island pageant, Christina had never put on a gown  or applied makeup before in her life. "I wore basketball shorts everyday, I wore my brothers t–shirts, " says Christina.

She's a star athlete, hitting the volleyball and basketball courts in high school and at URI.
Then one day, she decided to take on a much different comepetition. "When I entered the pageant, I had to give up basketball and volleyball for a make up brush and heels, " adds Christina.
So you're probably wondering why all of a sudden she wanted to enter a life of glitz and glamour. The reason is simple. "I had no idea what I was doing, but I wanted to see a new side of myself and see if I could be confident and I did, " says Christina.

She now heads to Baton Rouge, Lousiana for a chance at becoming Miss USA on June 8th. Christina says she's not nervous for the big leagues. Her main goal is to stay true to herself, and teach others to do the same. "You can be on stage with big curly hair, darker skin be tall that's why I want to be Miss USA, to show people you can be different..
