Roger Williams Park Zoo has announced the birth of a rare zoo baby just in time for Mother’s Day.

A Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo was born back in October but spends the first 9-10 months in the mothers pouch. The baby Kangeroo just recently started to poke her head out recently, according to zoo officials. It is the first tree kangaroo birth at the zoo in over twenty years and one of only three to be born in captivity this year. The species is considered endangered.

The zoo is currently working to build a new tree kangaroo exhibit to open in the early fall. Until then visitors can track the baby’s progress through images displayed in the Australia Building.
