The New Bedford Educators Association voted in favor of a motion expressing “no confidence” in School Superintendent Pia Durkin.

The vote comes after the union says Durkin tried to discipline teacher Joanne Maura after a student threw a chair at her and it was caught on video. The school department alleged that Maura did not report the incident properly. Maura was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

The union claims that Durkin’s policies have created the conditions that have resulted in an uptick of violence in New Bedford school.

The teachers allege that Durkin is micromanaging teachers, taking actions that do not support educators or students, violating teachers’ contracts, firing teachers without cause, and causing emotional distress to teachers.
