Firefighters have determined a camper explosion Friday morning in Tiverton was an accident. The propane explosion sent two people to the hospital with burns.

Neighbors in the Lawrence Court neighborhood of Tiverton woke up this morning to a loud bang and their homes shaking. It was an explosion inside a camper parked on the grass next to a house. A man and a boy had been staying there. Both were inside when the accident happened around 6:30 AM.

“This morning they got up. They were either going to ignite the stove or something– we're not really sure– and they had an explosion. So we're going to investigate and find out what happened,” said Lt. Joseph Plocicia of the Tiverton Fire Department.

Firefighters say the man and child were able to get themselves out and were rushed by rescue to the hospital. They suffered burns, but were alert and conscious.

“Oh my god. I just. I feel so badly,” said one neighbor.

The explosion did cause a small fire. It did not spread to the main house. There is serious damage to the camper its self.

“It blew the walls and the roof of the camper up and off and it landed back down on its self,” said Lt. Plocicia.

That man was cared for at Rhode Island Hospital. The little boy was treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Both are expected to be okay.
