There is a mounting garbage problem at the Fall River landfill.

The dump will be full by October and must be closed.

Right now there is no firm plan to handle the city's trash, but the Mayor promises one soon.

"There'll be no interruption in solid waste disposal. If you put your trash out on a Monday night; on a Tuesday morning it's going top be picked up. There's going to be a seamless transition," said Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan.

Among the options, building a transfer station so trash can be hauled to a dump in another county.

"It's October this closes. Are we going to wait until September before we decide what we are going to do? That' seems to be the habit," said Fall River resident C.J. Ferry.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "Critics say Fall River government has waited way too long to come up with an alternative plan. And, that for the first time ever, residents will now have to pay for trash collection.

Garbage cans have bar codes and there could be fees every time one is emptied.

"The people of Fall River are taxed enough and this will just be another fee that they lay on and it's just another tax with a different name. And it's unfair to the people of Fall River," said City Council critic Ferry.

Right now the city receives $1.5 million dollars a year for commercial dumping fees, but when the landfill closes, that money is gone.

(Mark Curtis Question: So it is possible people could eventually be charged for their trash pick up?).

"That's not a option I support. The City Council will discuss all options. So my goal going into this is to protect the taxpayer," said Mayor Flanagan.

Fall River hopes to have a new garbage plan soon.
