New security concerns after student murdered off-campus

An internal school department e–mail - leaked to ABC6 News - is raising more concerns about security at Juanita Sanchez School.

16 year-old Eric Cuesta was murdered on the streets of Providence last week, even though he was supposed to be at school.

According to the e–mail security cameras at Sanchez showed him coming to the school office for a late–entry slip at 11:22 a.m.

But just two minutes after being admitted to school, he snuck out the back door.

City Councilor Wilbur Jennings is among those questioning security.

"Who's minding the store? What I mean by that when I say that, is, who's watching what? Who comes in; who leaves? There's nobody. Nobody knows anything about who walks in the door and who walks out. It's like a free–for–all," said Councilor Jennings.

The email notes that two students with Costa when he was shot had also left school without permission.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "This letter obtained by ABC6 News says that teachers and students here at Juanita Sanchez are concerned about a lack of security and overall safety."

At the street memorial to Eric Costa, a neighbor who saw him the day he was killed said the school was lax.

"No police, because police can't be 24–hours over there, but I don't think they have good security," said neighbor William Tejada.

City Councilor Jennings agrees.

"To improve the security so something like this doesn't happen again," Jennings said.

The School Department says it's aware of the security issue and is working on it.
