The elimination of the sales tax on liquor and wine was a welcome sight for shoppers Sunday.

"That is a good thing any time you can save a few pennies here and there it's always a good thing" said Michael Goodwin, Providence.

"I think it's a good thing.  I am a regular wine user, hard alcohol not so much, but I think savings is a good thing for customers," said Brendan Britton, Providence.

The cut to the 7% tax is part of the 2013 budget.  It is designed to help keep Rhode Island competitive with Massachusetts, which has no liquor tax.

"It allows us an opportunity to you know match Massachusetts," said Eno manager Scott Lefler.

State Rep. Jan Malik and owner of Malik Liquors in Warren supports the tax cut.  He says Sunday customers were surprised and happy to see the savings.

"It's gonna help out, I hope bring people back to first shop Rhode Island also for people in Massachusetts to shop Rhode Island," said Malik.

The tax cut will only last until March of 2015.  It does not include beer.
