PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island students have made improvements on national assessments in grade 4 reading and grade 8 reading and math.

Thirty-eight percent of fourth graders were at least proficient in reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress, up 3 points from 2011. That was the last time the test was administered. Thirty-six percent of eighth graders were proficient in both reading and math. There were improvements of 3 points in reading and 2 points in math.

Proficiency in grade 4 math dropped 1 point to 42 percent.

The Rhode Island Department of Education released the results on Thursday.

The state says this is the first time students performed above the national average in all four assessments. Education Board Chairwoman Eva-Marie Mancuso says students are on the right track but more progress must be made.
