It's election day 2013, and voters will be heading to the polls here at home and across the country. Here are some local races in our area to watch for:
Fall River's Mayor, incumbant Will Flannagan, is seeking his third term in office. Running against him is newcomer Joseph Carvalho.
There are no contested races for mayor in Attleboro, but the city does have some highly contested council-at-large and school committee races.
Central Falls voters will be casting ballots, but there is only one contested race, and it's not for mayor. Incumbent James Diossa is running unopposed.
In Woonsocket elections will be held for both city council and mayor. Mayoral challenger, Lisa Baldelli-Hunt faces current mayor, Leo Fontaine. Hunt, a state representative, easily beat out Fontaine and two other candidates in the primary to advance to the general election. It is non-partisan.
The next Woonsocket mayor will serve 3 years, instead of 2, so the city can sync up its election to the state cycle of even years.
The cities of Boston and New York will both have their first new mayors in years.
New Jersey voters are deciding on a lopsided race for governor.
*Polls in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island open at 7. Ballots can be cast until 8 PM.
