Attleboro standoff ended, hostages released

An hours long standoff where a suspect who barricaded himself in an Attleboro home taking a mother and her child hostage has ended.

Shortly after 11:00 a.m. police announced that the male suspect is in custody.

During the standoff, which started after a man was shot near 4th Street before 5 a.m. this morning, the neighborhood was put on a shelter in place order. In addition area schools including Attleboro High School, Brennan Middle School, Willett Elementary School, Thacher Elementary, St. John's Catholic School, and Studley Elementary School were also ordered to shelter in place.

Police say the man shot was in his twenties and was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital to undergo emergency surgery. The condition of the man is unknown at this time. Police believe the shooting was targeted.

The man could face charges in Attleboro District Court as early as this morning.
