AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - UMass basketball player Derrick Gordon says in a televised interview that he is gay. Gordon made the announcement on ESPN on Wednesday, becoming the first openly gay player in Division I men's basketball. Gordon says he was inspired by NBA player Jason Collins and NFL prospect Michael Sam, who came out within the past year.
BOSTON (AP) - Democratic leaders in the Massachusetts House have unveiled a $36.2 billion state budget plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1st. House Ways and Means Chairman Brian Dempsey said the proposal is about 5 percent higher than the current budget and $191 million less than Governor Deval Patrick's proposed budget.
BOSTON (AP) - Democratic candidate for governor Joseph Avellone has released an economic development plan and says he's the only Democrat in the race who is willing to rule out any new, broad-based taxes. The business executive and former Wellesley selectmen said Wednesday that Massachusetts can afford new spending initiatives by reducing the cost of health care in the state budget.
LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A Groton man is facing charges after allegedly threatening a Lowell police officer with a syringe full of blood he said was infected with the AIDS virus. Gregory Tammaro is scheduled to be arraigned on charges including assault with intent to murder. Police tell The Sun of Lowell that officers responded to a city building at about 5 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a man using intravenous drugs in a bathroom. They say they used pepper spray to subdue Tammaro.
LYNNFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Three of the fiberglass cows that once stood outside the Hilltop Steak House restaurant in Saugus have found a new home not too far away. The Daily Item reports a cow and two calves have been installed outside near a children's play area at MarketStreet, an outdoor shopping center in Lynnfield.
