The City of Cranston has filed suit against Rhode Island Resource Recovery claiming the landfill has cost the city extra money in expenses to handle contaminated water.
Cranston's water treatment facility has been taking in waste water from the dump and treating it but the city says the water should have been pretreated by the landfill.
The city's attorney Evan Kirshenbaum says Cranston has spent millions of dollars treating the water and the Rhode Island Resource recovery only pays them approximately $400,000 dollars a year for the service.
Now, the city is seeking to recover additional expenses incurred from treating the water.
Rhode Island Resource Recovery has a plan in place to start sending the waste water to the Narragansett Bay commission for treatment, however, first they must build a pretreatment facility at the landfill.
