Providence Mayor, Angel Taveras, will formally announce his bid for Governor Monday morning. He will be the first prominent democrat to enter the race.
The field for Rhode Island's next Governor is already getting crowded, even though only one candidate has officially declared. Democratic State Treasurer, Gina Raimondo, is also considering a run. Clay Pell, the grandson of the late US Senator, Claiborne Pell, is also thinking about tossing his hat into the ring.
On the Republican side Cranston Mayor Allan Fung has expressed interest in the seat. He has an unspecified announcement scheduled for Monday of next week.
Moderate party founder Ken Block has already launched his bid.
Last month Lincoln Chafee, decided not to seek a second term in office.
Taveras' announcement is scheduled for 10 am at Providence's Meeting Street School on Eddy St.
