The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT) discovered Friday that someone had compromised an employer's information to gather personal information.
The unknown person or persons posed as an employer and used the DLT's online career portal, EmployRI.org, to contact 350 unaware individuals and ask that they set up a Yahoo account and send personal information.
The DLT has emailed all affected users to notify them of the issue and has also sent a letter by mail.
They are also suggesting that any of the 350 contacted individuals who provided information report a possible breach of security to three credit reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. DLT will make up to three months of credit monitoring services available to impacted individuals if they do this.
If you were one of the 350 affected individuals, you will have received the email or mail notification from the DLT.
RI State Police and the Attorney General's Office are working on the matter.
