Dee from the Desk: Just who benefits from rifle raffles?

Posted: Updated:

Did you know the National Rifle Association is hosting a gun raffle?

After the controversy surrounding the Rhode Island Republican party's gun raffle it is a shock that more people have not heard of this raffle.

The NRA is hosting a "Banned Guns" raffle on Monday October 21. Twelve guns are being raffled off including, a Les Baer Super Match Rifle, Barrett Rec7 Rifle, an AK style rifle, and a Remington Model 700 CDL Rifle. Tickets are on sale now.

Now compare this to the recent GOP AR 15 raffle; this raffle and these guns blow that out of the water- literally.

The Democrats and some Republicans were very worked up about what a "bad idea" the RIGOP's raffle was, but no one has heard a peep about this raffle.

Interestingly enough, here in Rhode Island there are a lot of lawmakers that may benefit from the proceeds of the NRA rifle raffle. How? Well a large number of lawmakers accept checks from the NRA Political Victory Fund PAC including, $1,000 paid to Senate President Teresa Piava Weed in February of 2012,  and another $1,000 in March of 2011. Speaker of the House Gordon Fox also benefited from this organization when he accepted an $800 check in January of 2012 and May of 2011.

Senate Majority Leader Dominic Ruggerio benefited from NRA money as well, accepting a $450.00 in February of 2011 and House Majority Whip Nicholas Mattiello accepted $8000 from the NRA as recently as February of 2013.

Republicans are on the list as well including Representative Doreen Costa who accepted $500 in October 2012 and House Minority Leader Brian Newberry who accepted $250.00 in April 2015. See complete list of lawmakers accepting checks from the NRA, here.

So unless the lawmaker who criticized the "gun raffle" decline to accept an NRA check next political cycle the RI GOP may not be the only one benefiting from a rifle raffle.
