The Providence Center has been awarded a $1.6 million federal grant to provide primary care and behavioral health services for patients without insurance who frequently seek treatment in emergency rooms.

The grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration will go to a program that provides health services for Rhode Islanders with chronic illnesses, mental health problems and substance use issues.

The Health Connections program targets patients who frequently seek care from the hospital system. It aims to improve overall health and reduce the use of expensive emergency room care.

The Providence Center, which focuses on behavioral health, has received six federal grants in the last three years totaling over $7 million.
