Every year hundreds of people line the street on Federal Hill for annual Columbus Day festivities. One of the major highlights is the parade. The red, white, and green stripes are already painted along the street, but this year a crowd favorite will have to sit it out.

The Rhode Island National Guard says it will be unable to participate in any events scheduled in October because it can't pay soldiers for the extra work. The guard also says that as many as 15 activities have been requested of the National Guard over Veteran's Day weekend in November. The guard says at this time whether they can participate in the events is up in the air because of the government shutdown.

About 300 guardsmen and women were furloughed when the shutdown went into place. Since that time a vast majority has been re–called, but funding is still a major issue, leaving things like community events up in the air.
