A New Bedford man has been arrested in connection with an explosion in Freetown early Wednesday morning.

The suspect, Derek Faisca-Ribeiro, age 25, was arrested near his home and charged with Possessing substances used to create a destructive device, Launching a destructive device, Discharging an explosive device to injure property, and Possession of destructive device.

At approximately 3:40 A.M., an officer observed a vehicle on the side of Chase Road with a mattress tied to its roof. The male driver told the officer that he had pulled over to make sure the mattress was secure.

Around 4 A.M., Freetown police were dispatched to an explosion and fire on Slab Bridge Road. The explosion shook a house that was 200 yards away. When police and fire units arrived they found a small fire, the remnants of a mattress and debris that was blown into nearby trees.

After a description of the male suspect and the suspect's vehicle was broadcast to other departments, New Bedford and State Police located the vehicle near the suspect's home. At around 6:20 A.M., police then located the suspect walking in the area of his home and placed him under arrest.

Once in custody, Faisca-Ribeiro was interviewed by FBI, ATF, State Police and Freetown Police officials. He admitted to purchasing fireworks in New Hampshire and consolidating them into one device.

In a search of Faisca-Ribeiro's home, law enforcement found material related to the Freetown incident and located military manuals for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Police believe he acquired those manuals during his military service as a combat engineer.
