An eleven-year-old Warren girl saves her friend from choking.

Hugh Cole fifth grader Haleigh Hunt learned the Heimlich maneuver last year in health class.  It's a lesson she didn't forget and is how she helped her friend Gianna McDonough last Friday during lunch.

"I was just eating my food and then suddenly I just choked on a piece of pineapple.  My friends started panicking," said McDonough.

"Well her face turned red and all my friends around me were freaking out and I am like what and she turned towards me and I looked into her face and it was all red," said  Hunt.

That's when she grabbed McDonough and started the Heimlich.  After two pumps the food popped out.

"I was kinda scared at first, happened so quick and when it got out of my mouth I was just so like relieved," said McDonough.

The Warren Fire Dept. was so impressed they gave Hunt the Hugh Cole Hero Award.

"It was a wonderful act on a young girl as I said in the town of Warren, smallest town in the smallest state.  We have lots of heroes and now we even have younger heroes," said Warren Fire Chief Al Galinelli.

Hunt says she'll do it again if needed.  Meantime, McDonough says she won't be having pineapple anytime soon.
