Motorists without an E_ZPass transponder have submitted less than $50 in voluntary toll payments for crossing the Sakonnet River Bridge.
While motorists with transponders pay the 10-cent toll automatically when using the bridge, motorists without E_ZPasses are asked to remit their payments voluntarily.
Motorists with transponders paid $80,000 in the first 45 days of tolling on the bridge, which connects Portsmouth and Tiverton.
The authority had planned to implement a higher toll and use cameras to record the plates of motorists without transponders so they could be billed through the mail.
The Authority scrapped that plan after lawmakers blocked the higher toll, saying it wouldn't be cost-effective to mail invoices for a 10-cent toll.
It's expected that the toll will increase this spring unless lawmakers can find an alternative.
