One of the top members of Gov. Lincoln Chafee's administration is interested in becoming a judge.
Director of Administration Richard Licht has asked state ethics officials whether it would be appropriate for him to apply to join the Superior Court.
The Ethics Commission will take up Licht's request Oct. 8.
The governor nominates Superior Court judges based on recommendations from a nominating commission. The governor's pick must be confirmed by the state Senate.
Licht is a former state Senator and lieutenant governor. He is a Harvard Law School graduate who ran for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 1988 and 2000.
The Chafee and Licht families have a long history. Licht's uncle, Frank Licht, served as governor after ousting incumbent John Chafee, Lincoln Chafee's father, in 1968.
