Social Security service limitations causing problems

It's just a little piece of paper, but a Social Security card is critical to so many aspects of your life. Not being able to get one is becoming a big problem for many Rhode Islanders. Sonia Diaz of Central Falls left the Pawtucket field office empty handed Thursday. Clerks there couldn't issue her a new card for her adopted son.

"They shouldn't close that. At least, I understand all the problems, but social security is something that you need that card for everything," said Diaz.

The government shutdown is limiting the services Social Security offices across the country can provide, so you can forget about getting a new card, at least for now.

Some services are still being processed. Social Security checks are not affected, and you can still apply for benefits, report deaths, or verify your citizenship status.

Still, that's not going to help people like Sonia Diaz's young son who is at a stand still until the shutdown is over.

"For everything that I'm going to do, put him in school, Medicaid, everything that I need it will impact not having that," said Diaz.
