A scare for parents and children at Harold Scott elementary school in Warwick. Teachers forced to pull their students back into the classrooms today, as police arrested a pervert near the school. The first recess was cut short Wednesday, and the second canceled, as soon as the school got word that a strange man was seen in the woods near the playground.
Parents whose children attend Harold Scott Elementary school in Warwick got an alarming email message from the principal Wednesday. A suspicious man had been spotted and arrested by Warwick police
Parent Erin Erban read the email after she got out of work.
"I actually didn't overreact at the time I thought maybe it's just something small you know I didn't think it was a big deal, but it wasn't until I got home, and I started getting texts from people that I found out more about what had actually happened," said Erban.
The parent of a kindergartner noticed the man in the woods near the playground, became suspicious, and called police.
"The officers responded and spoke to the witnesses that were there which were parents and apparently the elderly gentleman was located and was identified as having exposed himself, " said Captain Thomas Hannonof Warwick police.
As soon as the school was alerted, children were brought in from recess and kept inside until the man was taken into custody.
"At no point were any kids in danger and the school just did an outstanding job on reacting to the situation," said Hannon.
Erin Erban says the man was caught on the same path her 10–year–old daughter uses to walk to school each day.
"It wasn't until I was on my ride home that I had found out about the masturbation fact, and it's just scary, it's creepy to think there's woods all behind my house that my kids are in, my son walks home from the Jr. high occasionally, they always walk in a group, I just never expected something like that to happen," said Erban.
Captain Hannon applauds the parent who saw the man and acted.
"It got a gentlemen off the street that probably needed some help," he said.
As for Erban, she plans to drive her kids to school for the next few weeks, "I'm probably not going to let her or my son walk for a little while."
The man has been identified as 86-year-old David Davitt. He was charged with disorderly conduct and released. He'll be back in court at the end of October.
