Some Providence neighborhoods can expect a bunch of new trees to be planted this fall.

As part of an initiative to encourage environmental activism, Council President Michael Solomon announced they will be planting 90 trees in certain areas to reduce asthma in those neighborhoods.

"By increasing the number of street trees and by planting the right kinds of trees, we can reduce asthma rates and improve the quality of life in Providence," says Solomon.

The Rhode Island Department of Health reports that 10% of children in Rhode Island have asthma, and rates have risen since 1980 by more than 50%.

The tree planting program will also improve Providence's environment and air quality, something Solomon is proud to support.

The Parks Department, the Office of Sustainability, and the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative are also taking part in the planting program.
