The man who guided the Boston police department through the marathon bombings is stepping down.

Commissioner Ed Davis made the announcement at a press conference this Monday morning.

The 57–year old has been on the job for seven years, more than double the time most urban police chiefs stay on.

Davis says he's been thinking about leaving for awhile but had promised Mayor Menino he'd stay through the summer stating, "I leave the department on my own accord, and I'm very comfortable with the decision. I want to clear the deck for a new administration that's coming in."

Davis says he'll leave in the next 30 to 60 days. He's been offered a fellowship at Harvard and says he's seriously considering it.
