PROVIDENCE - Providence police officers were caught in the crossfire of a shootout last night. They were questioning known gang members in the area of Sackett and Emerson Streets, when a rival gang arrived and opened fire.
An 18 year old was shot in the legs. He was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"Where most would run the other way in the face of danger...
police, and in this case, Providence Police, go directly toward the danger and
toward the gunfire. The suspects ended up jumping into a vehicle and fleeing," said Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements.
A high-speed car chase ensued between Providence Police and the shooters, during which the gang members deliberately rammed the police cruisers, damaging the cars.
The shooters were chased to Depew St. in the South Elmwood neighborhood where they continued to flee on foot.
Police caught and arrested Vincente Rodriguez, 23, and James Lawrence, 20, both of Providence. A third suspect is still on the loose.
