A Providence special education teacher's aide has been arrested and charged with distributing a controlled substance near a school after he tried to congratulate his colleague with some marijuana.

Providence Police were called to Nathanael Greene Middle School last Thursday when Principal Dr. Nicole Mathis opened an envelope given to her by Special Education Teacher Christopher Sheehan to discover a couple buds of marijuana.

Dr. Mathis said Sheehan gave her the envelope stating it was a gift from him to congratulate her on receiving the Providence Principal of the year award. Upon realizing what the gift actually was Dr. Mathis immediately contacted authorities.

Sheehan was arraigned in Providence District court Monday and released on $10,000 with surety.
