A 40-year-old man was killed after attempting to cross I-95 South near the Route 146 merge.
The man identified as Terrance Iovino was struck by a car around 9:15 p.m. He died on Friday afternoon in the hospital.
State Police say they do not believe the driver that struck him is responsible for any wrong doing.
"Pedestrians are not allowed on the interstate," said Captain Frank Castellone of the Rhode Island State Police. "It was dark outside, and unsafe."
Police say they do not expect to press any criminal charges against the driver. It remains unclear what Iovino was doing on the interstate.
