The sound of church bells drives a man to take legal action against a church and the state of Rhode Island.
For some when they hear the sound of church bells it brings a rush of happy memories. But not for John Devaney he says they contributed to his divorce, interrupt his sleep, and force him to wear earplugs.
Devaney initially went to the city with his complaint but was told places of worship are exempt from city noise ordinances. So, he's filed a Federal lawsuit challenging the state law that says Government can't restrict a person's practice of religion. Devaney says by not turning down the chimes he's being denied of his peace and quiet.
The Providence diocese released a statement on behalf of the parish saying in part: "The parish believes the brief ringing of the bell is reasonable and well within its rights. We will pray for peace and understanding that our neighbors know of our charity and concern."
