The floor over the basement at the East Greenwich Fire Station on Main St. is in a state of disrepair, and has been for quite some time, says Fire Chief McGilvery.

"I think it should be replaced entirely," McGilvery said. The heavier ladder trucks, which weigh 61,000 pounds cause too much strain on the floor. The space is still used, putting smaller lighter trucks on that particular floor. However, that does not change the fact that the floor still needs to be repaired, the chief said. The town has been aware of the problem for a year and a half, and there is still no immediate plan to fix the problem.

Previous engineering estimates figure the costs will be around $25,000 to $50,000 to restore the structural integrity of the floor. However, they need to have another engineer examine the damage to get a more up-to-date estimate on the final cost.

The next town council meeting is September 9th.
