What is Treatment Foster Care?

Treatment Foster Care is a combination of the best parts of community foster care and residential placement. Children and youth are able to continue participation in family and community life and also receive structured treatment components within their home setting.

What is a Foster Parent's role?

Foster parents are a major resource for the Child Welfare System as a whole. It is the role of foster parents to offer a safe and stable home, while working with the child's team to prepare them for permanency (reunification, legal guardianship, or adoption). Treatment in the home starts with foster parents being aware of routine, structure, communication, attention to attachment issues, and training specific to the needs of each child.

Who are the children and youth we serve?

The only thing that all foster children have in common is that they have been separated from their parents. There are children of all ages in need of foster homes; however, 40% of children in foster care are age 12 or older.

What is the average length of stay in a foster home?

Foster care is intended to be a temporary living situation. The average length of stay is about 14 months, although some children stay for very short lengths of time and others may require foster care for years.

Where are the children while they are awaiting foster homes?

Some kids come into foster care directly from home; others have experienced multiple placements including group care. The majority of children and youth referred to TFC are waiting for placements while living in group care or residential settings.
