PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Rhode Island's hospitals have received $5.9 million in federal funds to help them respond to public health emergencies, disasters or acts of terrorism.

The money is intended to help the state's Department of Health and its hospitals work collaboratively to prepare for large-scale incidents involving epidemics, hurricanes, foodborne illness outbreaks, chemical spills or acts of terrorism.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed's office announced the grants on Wednesday. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Reed says events like the Boston Marathon bombing and Superstorm Sandy show the need for coordinated disaster planning by hospitals and state health officials.
