PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The city of Providence will be receiving a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town Grant.  The grant is worth 75-thousand dollars.

The money will be going towards a community effort to create a cultural area in downtown Providence along Washington Street and to establish a FirstWorks Festival.

The festival will take place on Kennedy Plaza as a biennial signature event in Providence.  The first festival is planned for September 20, 2014.

The transformation of Kennedy Plaza is a key component in Mayor Angel Taveras' economic development action plan.

Rhode Island has received multiple Our Town grants from the NEA over the years, including 200-thousand in 2011 for Providence and 50-thousand in 2012 for Warwick.

The NEA received 254 applications for Our Town this year.  The 59 projects that were chosen were made to partnerships that include at least one non-profit organization and a local government entity and encourage creative activity, community identity, and help revitalize the local economy.
