Today U.S. Senator Jack Reed joined Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, along with Patrick McGuigan, Executive Director of the Providence Plan (ProvPlan), Anthony Hubbard, the YouthBuild Director and young trainees from the program to announce the $1.1 million in federal funding  to help educate and supply at-risk young people the job skills needed to succeed.

"I am pleased the Providence Plan is receiving this critical federal funding to help build on the success of YouthBuild Providence," said Reed. "YouthBuild's innovative programs help young people further their education and learn new job skills while giving back to the community."

YouthBuild Providence provides youths with vocational training and academic opportunities for students who dropped out of their previous schooling. YouthBuild Providence, also a part of the Providence Plan, works to help students earn either their diploma or GED while gaining experience through participation in neighborhood construction projects.

"My administration is focused on ensuring that every child in Providence has access to excellent educational opportunities," said Taveras.  "By preparing its graduates for success in college and the workforce, the partnership between Providence Public Schools and YouthBuild is a good example of a successful alternative pathway to high school graduation.  Additional funding for YouthBuild will enhance the program for young people to participate and develop the skills they need to be successful."

YouthBuild Providence's plan is to use the federal funding over a two-year period, with a third year of follow up, to help 64 disadvantaged youth, aged 18 to 24, with academic training as well as on-site work experience, community service opportunities and leadership.

As one of the longest-running YouthBuild programs in the country, over 400 students have worked to build 18 units of affordable housing through the program. YouthBuild Providence will award its first regular high school diplomas in August as part of their partnership with Providence Public Schools.
