A mill fire in Central Falls has crews from several surrounding cities and towns on scene and has sent at least a half a dozen firefighters to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation or heat exhaustion.
The mill building on Foundry Street emitted heavy heat and smoke on Monday afternoon as a fire burned on the first floor of the three story building.
The building houses General Polymer Inc. a company that sells industrial paints and coatings. The Central Falls Fire Chief said that the fire started when paints were being mixed and caught fire.
Hazmat crews were called to the scene because the chemicals in the paint are considered extremely hazardous.
Fire fighters working on the fire left the building covered in soot and had to be hosed down. The fire chief said the chemicals are so dangerous that the suits used to fight the fire will have to be thrown out.
Crews remain on scene fighting to fire. The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
