RIPTA reorganization to change bus routes

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has approved a reorganization plan that eliminates service in low ridership areas while increasing it in areas where public transit is well-used.

The Providence Journal reports the RIPTA board approved the plan on Monday by a 5-1 vote.

The changes will affect more than 50 bus routes. Some lines will be combined, some route sections will be shifted to different lines, and some will be eliminated. RIPTA will also change its schedules so buses run at more regular intervals.

A RIPTA official says the changes should begin in September. RIPTA last week announced plans for other major initiatives. They include the launch of the system's first "rapid" bus line in its highest ridership corridor and smartphone bus tracking.
