A trash heap on a Pawtucket sidewalk has neighbors afraid to let their children outside. The people who used to live at the home on Jackson Street are long gone, but all 23 of their mattresses are still there, piled up on the sidewalk.

Neighbors say it is more than an eyesore, it is dangerous.

"It's disgusting," Monica Mckenzie said. "They should have taken care of it before they left. Children come around here and they touch those beds. It's wrong."

Children play hopscotch barefoot just steps away from the mound of mattresses they say is infested with bugs and rats.

The person in charge of renovating the home says the mattresses were found in the garage, left over from the previous tenants. He says they have been in touch with the city, but have yet to set a date for pickup.

"When we opened up the doors, it kind of shocked us to see everything in there," project manager Bob Taylor told ABC6 News.

Taylor says he only put the trash curbside this weekend. Neighbors say it has been there much longer than that. Regardless, Taylor promises to have it cleared by the end of the week.

According to the city of Pawtucket's website, you are not supposed to put anything on the sidewalk before the day it is scheduled for pickup. It costs $16 per mattress to have them taken away.
