WARWICK, R.I. - An alleged drunk driver is in police custody and an infant is in the hospital, after police arrested a 23 year-old man who was allegedly driving while intoxicated with a baby in the back seat.
Police say shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, they saw a car traveling down Warwick Avenue at high speeds, weaving in and out of lanes as it traveled towards the Warwick Ave/Airport Rd. intersection.
At the intersection, police say, the car struck another vehicle and caused it to roll over before continuing down Airport Road, with police in hot pursuit.
A few hundred feet later, police say the man driving lost control of his car and struck three other vehicles before crashing into a retaining wall.
The driver, Anthony Diaz, 23, of Warwick, attempted to run away and was taken down by police. Police say they quickly determined that Diaz was allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
After Diaz was taken into custody, police discovered an infant in the car. It is unclear if the infant was strapped in or properly restrained in an infant car seat.
The baby suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hasbro Hospital, but is expected to survive.
Police say the incident stems from a domestic dispute involving Diaz and another person. Diaz may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
