A mother has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence and drug possession after running a stop light and smashing her vehicle into a pole seriously injuring her two unbuckled  children.

26-year-old Yesenia Rivera drove her vehicle through a stop sign at Dora and Webster streets and then made a wide turn causing her vehicle to hit a pole.

Upon impact her three-year-old son who was unbuckled was thrown forward and struck the windshield causing a serious head injury. Her five-year-old son, also unbuckled, was forced forward into the rear of the front seat and seriously injured.

Police arrested Rivera and charged her with two counts of driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, two counts of driving to endanger causing serious bodily injury, possession of cocaine, driving on a suspended license, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

She was arraigned on charges Thursday morning and bail was set at $10,000 with surety.
