A 12–year–old boy is lucky to be alive after falling into the Pawtuxet River on Sunday. West Warwick police say Brian Smith fell into the water while fishing near River Point Park. Rescue crews eventually found him down stream, clinging to a branch in the swift current. The officer who rescued the boy, says the river has become much more dangerous since the start of the heavy rains.

"When I was reaching out with the stick to try and reach Brian, I thought I was stepping on something that was solid ground. As soon as I put my foot down and put my weight on it, I went four feet into the water, so what you think is solid ground is not necessarily," said Sgt. Roland Coutu.

The boy was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries.
