Homeowners Along Pawcatuck River Worried

Residents in Southern Rhode Island are dealing with flooding as a result of this week's heavy rain. The Pawcatuck River flowed well outside its banks in many areas following Tuesday's storm.

"If it gets any higher it will come up under the house," said Robert Gelinas whose home sits on the banks of the river in Ashaway about a mile from the Westerly border.

By Tuesday evening, the water was just a few feet from touching the back of his home, which is normally separated by about 50 feet of backyard.

The threat of flooding this week is welling up bad memories of the major flood of 2010. Gelinas says after a dam collapse just up river three years ago, his home was flooded by about six feet of water.

The flooding situation will get worse before it gets better along the Pawcatuck. The river is expected to crest on Wednesday.
