The secretary of the Rhode Island National Education Association is stepping aside from his elected post after he was arrested for assaulting a man inside an East Greenwich restaurant.
58-year-old Louis Rainone allegedly was involved in a dispute with another patron at Harbourside Restaurant in East Greenwich on Friday.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. Rainone is accused of threatening to throw the other patron in the ocean then punching him in the face.
Some witnesses say the patron pushed Rainone prior to the punch.
Rainone was arrested and charged with simple assault. He was released on $50 cash bail and will appear in Kent County Courthouse on June 21 to answer to charges.
The NEA says the incident is being considered a "personal matter" as it did not take place while Rainone was conduct union business. The union clarified that Rainone is not a paid NEA employee but rather elected.
