PAWTUXET, RI- Friday's rain put the Gaspee Days Parade at risk of being canceled. Local businesses were pleased the weather cleared up just in time for Saturday's festivities.

Gaspee Days commemorates the first time colonials retaliated against the British.

"The real celebration here is about American freedom and everybody along this parade route knows that," said Parade Grand Marshall, Bob Burke.

Many were happy the weather cleared just in time for the race and didn't ruin the parade that typically draws at least 70-thousand people. Businesses typically count on that crowd to make money.

Just a few feet away from where crowds gathered in Pawtuxet Village , the river was nearly over its banks; showing just how close the parade was to being canceled.

The fireworks were the only thing really affected by the weather. They were postponed from Friday night until tonight.
