Hendricken's King Named Player of the Year

Posted: Updated:

The Gatorade Company, in conjunction with USA Today High School Sports, has named Bishop Hendricken senior Mike King as its 2013 Gatorade Rhode Island Baseball Player of the Year. King is the ninth Hendricken baseball player to receive this award.

King, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to pitch for and study at Boston College starting this fall, is a standout right-handed pitcher for the Hawks. He has posted a 7-0 record this season with a 0.30 earned run average. In 47 innings pitched, he has struck out 67 hitters and walked seven. At the plate, he has hit .469 with 18 runs batted in. He will be an integral part of the Hawks' Division I title defense in June.

Off the field, King has maintained a 3.42 grade point average and volunteered at the Rhode Island Family Shelter, as part of the Pan-Mass Challenge charity race, and in his church, St. Gregory the Great in Warwick.

The Gatorade Player of the Year awards recognize athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. With the state award, King is now a finalist for National Player of the Year, an award won by major leaguers including Chipper Jones (1990), Derek Jeter (1992), Roy Halladay (1995), Jon Lester (2002), and David Price (2004). Here is a list of recent Rhode Island POY winners, as supplied by Gatorade:

2012: David Hopkins, East Greenwich
2011: Harrison Barlow, South Kingstown
2010: Anthony Aceto, North Providence
2009: Ryan Morris, North Kingstown
2007 & 2008: Ryan Westmoreland, Portsmouth
