Gorton Junior High School will keep its doors open- at least a little bit longer.
Hundreds of students and parents cheered at last night's Warwick School Committee meeting when the committee decided to table a vote on whether to close down Gorton Junior High School. In a 4 to 1 vote the committee voted to hold off on voting to close the school that is struggling because of declining enrollment.
The city says the cost of operating three junior high schools with declining enrollment is too much for the cash-strapped district.
A special commission studied the issue of Warwick's Middle Schools and recommended the closing of Gorton. Parents and students affected by the closings have been very vocal in their opposition.
