A Brown University basketball player is in critical condition in the hospital after he was punched in the head early Sunday morning.
21-year-old Joseph Sharkey of Norwood, Mass., was talking to a group of young woman on Thayer Street near George Street when he was punched in the face by a white male with a crew cut. Sharkey was knocked down by the blow and the assailant left.
Campus and city police responded to the scene around 2 a.m. where they found Sharkey with "severe injuries." Sharkey was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Police believe that the suspect was unknown to Sharkey and the attack was unprovoked.
No arrests in connection with the incident have been made and the investigation continues to be ongoing.
Sharkey, a sophomore, was benched for most of the 2011-2012 season with and injury. Prior to playing college basketball Sharkey was the MVP at the 2011 National Prep School Invitational.
