WESTERLY, R.I. - A rainy opening to Rhode Island's beach season kicked off at Westerly's Misquamicut State Beach on Saturday.

Despite the stormy weather, over a hundred people turned out for festivities taking place at the beach, which is still under construction after being ravaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Few people were walking on the beach or swimming Saturday afternoon as torrents of rain poured down on the sands. Bulldozers adorned the edges of the beach near the parking lots, a grim reminder of Sandy's destructive power.

Outside of the beach pavilion, the carnival of the third annual SpringFest adorned the parking lot. Officials tell ABC6 they have worked hard to make repairs to the beach in time for the summer tourism season.

The work of hundreds of volunteers and organizations has paid off, and the beach will be ready for the thousands who flock to its shores each season.
