Dave's Marketplace made a donation of nearly 22,000 pounds of apples to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

This is the third year that the "Take A Bite Out Of Hunger" campaign, sponsored by First Fruits Marketing of Washington, has partnered up with Dave's Marketplace and other local retailers to make donations to local food banks around the United States and Canada.

"Take A Bite Out Of Hunger is a great way to provide fresh produce to our food bank, something that is often lacking on the shelves" said Charley DiMascio, director of produce at Dave's Marketplace. "This program provides tangible help to those in need and providing the donation in the area where we work and live helps support our community."

Food insecurity, or not having regular access to safe, affordable and nutritious foods is a big issue in United States. In 2010, 15% of all U.S. households were food-insecure.  Rhode Island has the highest level of food insecurity in New England.

This year seven retailers have joined the "Take A Bite Out Of Hunger" effort, with 250,000 pounds of apples accrued for donation to local food banks throughout the United States.

"This program is one of our favorites," remarked Dennis Jackson, category manager of First Fruits of Washington. "We enjoy helping our retail partners like Dave's Marketplace make these donations and have received great feedback from the food banks which are always appreciative of receiving fresh and healthy produce."
