Illegal immigrants in Rhode Island will not be granted driver's licenses this year.

Advocates for illegal immigrants rallied at the State House months ago, demanding that undocumented workers be allowed to get Rhode island driver's licenses.

The main reason they cited: getting to their jobs.

Juan Garcia of Immigrants in Actions said, "We take driving the car for work. And right now the police have stopped the people and sent to jail you know because it's a crime to be driving without a license."

Immigrant advocates say Governor Chafee promised driver's licenses for illegals, but hasn't followed through.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "Now advocates for illegal immigrants say they're willing to undergo background checks and buy auto insurance in order to get driver's licenses. But they say what they are not willing to do is be fingerprinted."

Now, the timing of Tuesday's Senate hearing may not help advocates for illegal immigrants.

Sunday night - an illegal immigrant - 39 year old Andres Morales, was accused of hitting and killing 6 year old Derrick Johnson in Providence.

Morales, who was driving a pick-up truck, has no license.

Terry Gorman from (RIILE) Rhode Islanders for Immigration Law Enforcement said, "The Senate in Rhode Island, putting a bill forward to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens, two days after an illegal alien killed a 6 year old boy in Providence. That will be the headline. We'll look like the biggest bunch of fools in the whole country."

Morales is being held on immigration charges.

Meanwhile the Senate hearing to provide driver's licenses for illegals moved forward, but the Judiciary voted to table the bill for additional study - a euphemism that means the bill is dead for this year.
